Introduction
In any business, success is dependent on employee performance, and employee performance is dependent not just on their skill level but also on their willingness, ideally their eagerness, to do what is required, i.e. employee engagement. Training and development programmes are vital, and if done well, gives a sense of achievement and motivates higher effort, involvement, and performance. Smaller companies are at greater risk than large ones as they have fewer resources and are dependent on fewer employees. Training can be expensive, so it is important to invest in programmes that can be shown to be worth the money in improved performance.
This literature review looks at the theories behind training programmes, the processes involved, and the benefits both to the organisation and the individual.
